The UN Global Compact in Russia
To advance the UN Global Compact and its principles at the local level, the companies and organizations come together voluntarily and establish Local Networks.
The Global Compact Local Networks play an essential role in rooting the ideas and principles of the initiative. The Local Networks contribute to the development of public-private partnerships and the consolidation of joint effort aimed at sustainable development as well as represent the interests of their participants worldwide.
The Global Compact is aimed to empower capacity-building of the Local Networks through development of their activities standards in order to facilitate decision-making that affects the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
2001. Official presentation of the UN Global Compact in Russia. Organized by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation and the Russian. Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme and other UN agencies in Russia.
2008. Formal establishment of the Global Compact Network Russia on the premises of the United Nations Development Programme. The Russian Network is a voluntary system of cooperation between legal entities aimed to ensure effective activities on promoting the fundamental principles of the UN Global Compact.
2009. Signing the first Memorandum of Understanding between the UN Global Compact Headquarters in New York and the Global Compact Network Russia.
2011. Invitation of the first Russian company – participant of the Global Compact Network Russia – Sakhalin Energy Investment Company Ltd. (Sakhalin Energy) to join the Global Compact LEAD, an exclusive group of sustainability leaders from across all regions and sectors.
2012. Participation of the Global Compact Network Russia delegation in the Rio+20 Corporate Sustainability Forum: Innovation & Collaboration for the Future We Want (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil).
2013. Election of Vnesheconombank as the chairing company of the Global Compact Network Russia. Participation of the Bank representatives and the Global Compact Network Russia delegation in the UN Global Compact Leaders Summit: Architects of a Better World and organization of the press conference “Russia’s Hour. Investments of Russian Business in Sustainable Development” (New York, USA).
2014. Participation of the Global Compact Network Russia delegation in the first World Conference on Indigenous Peoples being the first in the history of the United Nations (New York, USA).
2015. Participation of the Global Compact Network Russia delegation in the events titled “Global Compact +15: Business as a Force for Good” devoted to the 15th Anniversary of the Global Compact (New York, USA).
2015-2016. Transformation of the Global Compact Network Russia and establishment of the Association. The Association is the legal successor of the Global Compact Network Russia and the major principal structure representing the Global Compact Network Russia in the world.
The Global Compact Network Russia joins together 77 participants, including such large companies as Vnesheconombank, Rosneft, RUSAL, Sistema JSFC, Russian Railways, Sakhalin Energy Investment Company Ltd., LUKOIL, financial corporation Uralsib, affiliated company Philip Morris International as well as small and medium-sized enterprises, business associations, non-profit organizations and academic institutions.
The Global Compact seeks to improve the quality and quantity of partnerships undertaken by the Global Compact participants to advance UN goals and issues.
Today the governance structure of the Global Compact Network Russia is represented by the Annual Meeting of the Network participants (the superior body) and the Steering Committee (collegial body).
The Chair of the Steering Committee is the official Network representative who is elected by the Steering Committee members among them by a majority of vote.
In 2013, Vnesheconombank was elected the Chair of the Steering Committee of the Global Compact Network Russia. The company still continues to fulfill obligations and perform the functions of the Russian Network’s flagship related to organization of the Network’s activities in Russia and its positioning on international platforms, as well as institutional development, promotion and intensive growth of influence of the Network in the Russian Federation. Simultaneously, Vnesheconombank maintains multilateral cooperation of the Russian Network with other 88 Local Networks and the Office of the UN Global Compact in New York on issues related to promotion of principles of responsible business practice in Russia and discussion of opportunities for participation of the Russian companies in implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
