Annual meeting of the Global Compact Network Russia 2016

On December 22, the UN House hosted the annual meeting of the participants of the Global Compact Network Russia that traditionally reviews the Network’s progress in the current year and maps out its plans for the next year.

Welcoming the participants on behalf of the UN Office in Russia, the Head of UNEP Moscow Office Vladimir Moshkalo outlined the relevant objectives of the Global Compact as the UN initiative in the area of sustainable development.

The Network’s progress towards achieving these objectives and priority areas defined for 2017 were represented by the Chair of the Global Compact Network Russia Larisa Ovchinnikova. The trajectory of the UN Global Compact implies business engagement in new Sustainable Development Goals, and this trajectory is consistent with the current trends of responsible business practice in Russia; therefore, there is an opportunity to look broader at the Global Compact Network Russia activity and its partnerships. For example, the prospects for collaboration of the Global Compact Network Russia and the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs to the benefit of the Russian business community. The formats of collaborative activities in this area were featured by the Deputy Chair of the Global Compact Network Russia, Managing Director of the Office for Corporate Responsibility, Sustainable Development and Social Entrepreneurship of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs Elena Feoktistova.

Certain activity areas of the Network related to implementation of the Global Compact principles were represented by the Chair of the Board of the Inter-regional Public Organization “Committee for Fighting Corruption” Anatoly Golubev (the Network’s activity in the area of anticorruption in the private sector) and the member of the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation, Director of the Agency for Social Information Elena Topoleva-Soldunova (the role of the Global Compact Network Russia in promoting the UN Guiding Principles on Businessand Human Rights).

The participants of the meeting discussed the prospects for 2017 in key areas and noted that the variety of the Network's activities has the top priority – to extend Russian business representation at international platforms, to make a positive investment, business and cultural image of the country.

More focus should be placed on a greater role of Russia in international cooperation within the UN system, and a new impulse should be given to promotion of best practices applied by the Russian corporate sector at international platforms. Tangible results, projects, formed working groups, close communication and productive work on systemic basis during the upcoming year should ensure the Network’s ability to participate in any formats of the UN activities, present the Network and its participants in a much broader way at international events.

To avoid confusion and legal conflicts in 2017, the annual meeting approved the decision on standardized work only under the auspices of the Association. The format of the Association will help to ensure the consistency of the Network’s history in Russia and significantly increase the scale of its activity. The concept of the Association development is designed based on modern global trends in sustainable development and corporate responsibility. The Association “National Network of the Global Compact” will work as a public institution aimed at extension of business contacts and opportunities for the Russian business at the national and international levels, promotion of best practices and achievements of the Russian business, and development of a stable and open economy in Russia.
