General meeting of the Global Compact Network Russia
On 22 December, the ceremonial General meeting of the Global Compact Network Russia aimed to review the Network’s progress in 2015 and mark the 70th anniversary of the United Nations and the 15th anniversary of the Global Compact was hosted in the Hilton Moscow Leningradskaya Hotel. The Global Compact Network Russia signatories, representatives of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, the Ministry for Economic Development of the Russian Federation, the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation, UN agencies and other partnering organizations became participants of the meeting.
On behalf of Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation G.M. Gatilov, Deputy Director of the Department of International Organizations of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation D.I. Maksimychev made welcoming remarks to the participants.
It was stressed in the remarks that the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation welcomes the activity of the Global Compact Network Russia, considers it successful and meaningful, and is prepared to provide full assistance and support in the future.
Several key reports on the Global Compact as the largest initiative of the UN and its role in shaping responsible business practice in Russia as well as the results of the Network’s activity in 2015 and priorities for development in the short term perspective were made at the meeting.
Deputy Chair of the Global Compact Network Russia, Head of the Center for CSR and non-financial reporting of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs E.N. Feoktistova, Deputy director of the Department of European, North American Countries and International Organizations of the Ministry for Economic Development of the Russian Federation D.S. Ulin, Chair of the Executive Committee of the World Federation of United Nations Associations, First Deputy Chair of the Russian United Nations Association A.N. Borisov and Director of the UN Information Center in Russia (1999 – 2015) A.S. Gorelik welcomed participants of the Global Compact Network Russia.
Chair of the Global Compact Network Russia L.E. Ovchinnikova reported on the activities of the Global Compact Network Russia in 2015 and priorities for its development in the short term perspective. L.E. Ovchinnikova noted that the outgoing year was fruitful and successful. It was full of important international events that determined not only the future of the Global Compact, but became crucial for sustainable development of the world as a whole.
2015 was eventful for the Global Compact Network Russia participants as well. Global priorities determined their interest in several key issues such as fight against corruption, respect for human rights by the business community and corporate responsibility for climate impact.
In general, during 2015 about fifty events under the auspices of the Global Compact Network Russia were hosted. Most of them took place in Moscow and St. Petersburg. However, the work in the regions became active: the year is characterized by interesting events in Kaluga (for example, the conference “Kaluga – the city of sustainable development: growth points”), Kazan (the summer campus of the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration), Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk (the regional workshop “The Universal Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples: Practice and Application in Russia") and Primorsky Krai (a series of round tables on the establishment of the national park “Bikin” in Primorsky Krai) and other.
The discussion of the activity prospects of the Association established to optimize and expand the work of the Global Compact Network Russia in accordance with international projects, programs and agreements became an important part of the meeting.
“I hope I managed to confirm our willingness to give new momentum for the activities of the Global Compact Network Russia and remind once again that we have all possible resources for that, - said L.E. Ovchininkova - I am sure that the resources of the established Association, relevant programs and formats of work that we are launching next year, the pool of partners and experts developed around the Russian Network, your initiative and professionalism enable us to engage more supporters, participants, friends and all together bring the Global Compact Network Russia to a new level. "
The participants of the Global Compact Network Russia, including IC RUSS-INVEST, RUSAL, SUE "Vodokanal of St. Petersburg", interregional public organization "Committee for fighting corruption", international medical center “Nevron”, non-profit organization “Agency for Social Information” and the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs were awarded for contribution to the development and promotion of the Global Compact Network Russia in 2015.
At the end of the meeting, the Agreement on information cooperation between the Global Compact Network Russia and the Russian Union of Journalists was signed. This agreement has special importance for further promotion of the activities and initiatives of the Russian Network and its participants.
Chairman of the Russian Union of JournalistsV.L. Bogdanov proposed to launch in 2016 the all-Russia discussion platform for journalists titled "The UN Global Compact is the formula of confidence” which will enable to discuss on a large scale the role of the initiative in shaping the framework of a sustainable future.back
