New world order. Global Compact perspective

During the 19th World Festival of Youth and Students, Marina Vashukova, the executive director of the Association ‘National Network of the Global Compact’, took part in the discussion of the Gorchakov Public Diplomacy Fund, devoted to the new world order and to the role of international organizations in its formation. She presented the Global Compact perspective to the new world order:

‘Such a version might seem an idealized one…Yes, it indeed combines the elements of utopia and dream. Nevertheless, we deal with business, and -  whatever dreamy it is – it will never allow to go far from reality, and will not be able to do so. However, the cornerstone of the Global Compact ideology is the desire to create the word, where we want to live. It’s one of the initiative’s slogans. ‘We’ refers to the contemporary generations of business-leaders jointly with various partners. The world we want is the world, which we should leave to our children. Global Compact was founded when it became clear that harmonic development of the economy is impossible without considering social, environmental, informational and other impacts; that the world’s resources are not only exhaustible, but already exhausted in many directions; that the new business philosophy has matured, which key characteristics are responsibility and sustainability. Global Compact believes that its mission is to mobilize the international movement of companies, which want to be responsible and sustainable, and which are ready to become so; companies, which gave a new though to such previously unbreakable notions as profit, personal or commercial interests, business culture, strategy, the very idea of business-leadership. More and more entrepreneurs are realizing that long-term business sustainability, its comfortable existence with lowered risks, good reputation, access to investment markets are impossible without an ability to manage its impact and to be responsible for it. Companies, making the new world order from the Global Compact perspective close, put in the forefront not only financial, but also environmental, social, moral and ethical responsibilities, their duty to the society and to the human. They observe their transforming role in moving towards the better future, do not separate themselves from the society, calling its representatives ‘consumers’, they find what they have in common with society, study or create new values, calling society representatives ‘stakeholders’, the parties involved. That is what kind of business, front the Global Compact perspective, plays the key role in transforming the world, in forming the new world order, more fair, more inclusive, providing new opportunities for everyone.

The discussion participants discussed the place and the meaning of international organizations today; prospects and factors of the new world order, as well as the role of international NGOs on the conflict management. Out of the discussion experts, there were present such personalities as V. Kuznetsov, Director of the UN Information Center, A.
