UN Global Compact 15th Anniversary marked in New York

On 23-25 June, events titled Global Compact +15: business as aforce for good” dedicated to the 15th Anniversary of the Global Compact’s founding were held at the United Nations Headquartersin New York.

More than 1 000representatives ofbusiness, civil society, governments and UN agencies became participants.

At a welcoming ceremony UN Secretary General BanKi-moon gave a speech addressed to the participants. The Secretary General stressed that theglobal business communitycan contribute toimplementation ofgoals and objectivesset by theUnited Nations,and calledfor actionin such areas as climate change, fight against corruption, elimination of tax barriers, strengthening of trade and industry associations as well as strengthening of financial markets.

Presidentof the 69thsession ofthe UN General Assembly Sam Kutesa, Executive Director of the UN Global Compact Georg Kell, Chief Executive Officer of UnileverPaul Polman, Chief Executive Officer of NestlePaulBulcke, First woman Presidentof Ireland MaryRobinson spoke at the ceremony.

In addition to the ceremonial session, about a dozen different events took place, including XIII Annual Local Network Forum, LEAD meetings, the UN System Private Sector Focal Points Network Annual Meeting, workshops and roundtables on such issues as responsible supply chain, anti-corruption, climate change, children's rights, labor, business for peace and others.

Special attention was paid to Sustainable Development Goals and Post-2015 Development Agenda. Global Compact Local Networks play an important role in achieving these goals, contributing to development of public-private partnerships and consolidation of collective action at the national level.

Local Network representatives from Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, Mexico, India, China, South Korea, Italy, Spainand Germany reported on the implementation of existing initiatives in this area.The representative of theGlobal Compact Network Russia madea presentation about best practicesfor respect, support and promotion of the rights of indigenous peoplesin the Russian Federation.

As part of theevents, the UN Global Compact Annual Local Network Report “Local Networks: Building a Better Future Together” was presented, the election of the Local Networks Advisory Group for the period 2015 – 2017 was held as well as survey results conducted by the Global Compact Office were presented.

In general, all participants gave a high rating to and acknowledged the successful role of the UN Global Compact in promoting sustainable business for the past 15 years.
