UN Ministerial Meeting on Peacekeeping
On May 13–14, 2025, Berlin will host the UN Ministerial Meeting on Peacekeeping — one of the key international events dedicated to discussing the future of UN peacekeeping operations and strengthening global cooperation in this area.
Main objectives of the event:
• To discuss new models and approaches to peacekeeping aimed at enhancing effectiveness and adapting to modern challenges.
• To develop concrete commitments from Member States to address resource and capacity gaps in peacekeeping missions.
• To promote initiatives for training, capacity-building, and strengthening partnerships between countries.
The event is timed to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the United Nations and the 10th anniversary of the Leaders’ Summit on Peacekeeping, highlighting its special significance in the context of global efforts to maintain peace.
Preparatory meetings:
• On December 10–11, 2024, a meeting focused on capacity-building and partnerships was held in Montevideo, Uruguay, organized by Japan, the United Kingdom, and Uruguay.
• On February 4–5, 2025, a meeting dedicated to the future of peacekeeping and new models took place in Jakarta, Indonesia, organized by Bangladesh, Indonesia, the Netherlands, and the United States.
At the initiative of Germany and other co-chairs of the ministerial process, the UN Department of Peace Operations commissioned a study entitled "The Future of Peacekeeping: New Models and Corresponding Capabilities". This study, presented on November 1, 2024, outlines 30 potential models for future missions and emphasizes the need for a politically driven, people-centered approach to peacekeeping.
